Freemasonry offers a lifelong journey founded upon fellowship, moral development and charitable giving. Our members support their local communities by raising funds for a wide range of charitable causes, contributing freely and generously.

If you have an interest in joining Freemasonry, you have already taken the first step on a rewarding path.

The United Kingdom is the historic home of Freemasonry, with over 200,000 members meeting in almost 8,000 Lodges and Chapters nationwide. Each Lodge raises funds at a local level, supporting charities within the community as well as regional and national initiatives. Collectively, Freemasons in the UK donate many millions of pounds to charity every year.

If these values align with your own, and you wish to know the answer to a question often asked…

What are masons and who are masons?

Freemasonry is a wonderfully diverse interest, one that has the potential to become a lifelong journey, continually giving back to you and to the community around you. One of the great strengths of Freemasonry is that you only commit what you can, in both time and effort. No task or role is ever forced upon you, and you will never be asked to place Freemasonry above your family, your work, or the other important parts of your life. What you put in, and what you take from it, is entirely your choice.

A major part of your Masonic journey is the knowledge that almost every meeting, event, and gathering of your fellow Brethren helps to raise funds for charity—supporting local causes as well as wider regional and national initiatives

Which lodge should I join?

Choosing a Lodge is usually a matter of location, and then meeting the members to get a feel for who they are, when they meet, and how they work. Lodges meet on different days, in different places, and each has its own character and aims. If you are interested in joining Freemasonry, Carnarvon Lodge would be delighted to help you begin that journey.

If you live in South Derbyshire, Burton upon Trent, or the surrounding areas, and are genuinely interested in joining Freemasonry, please contact us by completing the online form or emailing: hello@carnarvonlodge.co.uk

If you live outside these areas but feel a particular connection to Carnarvon Lodge No. 1739, you are still very welcome to get in touch and join us.

Pause and think: Why am I considering this?

Your reasons for joining Freemasonry will be personal and unique to you. There are hundreds of thousands of Freemasons, and each one has his own story and motivation. You might be seeking friendship, camaraderie and a sense of belonging. You might feel a desire to help others in your community. Or you may be looking for a purposeful hobby, something structured, meaningful and of real value.

Whatever your reason, it is important to be sure that the Masonic experience will fit comfortably with your lifestyle and your wider life choices.

Am I eligible?

The eligibility criteria for joining Freemasonry are straightforward. If you are a man aged 21 or over, you may join any Lodge regardless of your ethnic background, political views, economic circumstances or religious beliefs. The only requirement in this regard is that you must hold a belief in a Supreme Being. Without such a belief, there may be difficulties with membership, as this would create an incompatibility between your values and the core values of Freemasonry.

As with any organisation, there are costs involved, and it is important that you are able to meet these comfortably. Freemasonry places great emphasis on ensuring that membership does not adversely affect your family or work life. You should be able to afford Lodge subscriptions and charitable contributions without strain. (The current annual subscription for Carnarvon Lodge is £170.)
